[TIP: The size dries clear, so I added powdered dye, in order to see the image on the opaque substrate as I painted.]

After Fort Lewis, Colorado, was officially abandoned in 1891, all identifiable military personnel were transferred from its cemetery to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. In 1889, James H. Voorhees was buried in the cemetery -- to be called the Pagosa Springs Cemetery, after the transfer of military remains was made. The Pagosa Springs Cemetery is at South 10th and Navajo Streets.

Hawk silhouettes, shot from inside.

After marking recent bird strikes with blue painter's tape, I stenciled hawk silhouettes on the outside of my living room window (which is directly east of the bird feeders). I'm not sure if the bird-of-prey shape is as important as simply disrupting the reflective surface of the glass, but the shape should be on the outside of the window.

The shape I used is based on a Window Hawk design by Visible Ink. I'd bought a pair of their clingFilm window stickers years ago, from an Audubon Society store in Oregon. Other hawk shapes to base stencils on are available online from The National Wildlife Federation (Make a Hawk Silhouette), and Hawk Mountain bird refuge (Helpful Hawks -- a particularly nice publication, in PDF).

Jackson's Latest Offering

In the last few weeks, Jackson's brought in 3 sparrows that I've rescued before he started plucking them, and over 7 mice. This is the first mouse that I got to before Jackie was done with it (Izzy usually gets hold of them when Jackson's finished, ick). I caught this guy with a cup while Jack was batting him around, and I released him on the railroad tracks under I72 -- he'll be a meal for something other than our big fat cat.
